Gamelan Dewi Malam - the Gamelan of the Queen of the Night - is a community Balinese gamelan orchestra based in Tucson, Arizona. We play both sitting gamelan angklung and processional gamelan beleganjur. The group is named after the beautiful night-blooming Queen of the Night cactus that is native to Tucson and magically blooms only one night each year.
Inspired by the beautiful and magical music and culture of Bali, we perform music faithful to the traditions of gamelan as seen and heard in Bali. Our instruments are traditional Balinese angklung and belaganjur instruments brought from Bali.
Playing traditional Balinese music taught by Balinese masters including I Nyoman Sumandhi, I Wayan Suweca, I Nyoman Wenten, I Wayan Rai, and I Nyoman Sedana, and with offerings of flowers, incense and holy water, we bring the magic of Bali to every performance.
Gamelan Dewi Malam is thrilled to announce that we will be returning for our third year at Tucson Meet Yourself - an exciting celebration of the diverse cultural makeup of our beloved city.
We'll be playing a special set of traditional Balinese gamelan music on both the angklung instruments (pictured here) and introducing the rarely-performed processional beleganjur instruments.
Please join us for this special performance closing out the Tucson Meet Yourself festival in downtown Tucson, Sunday October 6, from 5-6pm on the Lawn Stage. Hope to see you there!
